FAQ

Where did our name Saint Lucifer Spice come from?

It’s a play on words. We are as spicy as you want us to be, Lucifer, but also a spice that can be mildly and Saintly applied to food as a flavor enhancer. We felt combining Good and Evil would lead our products into conversation. The name is just in jest, and we have fun with it. We hope it’s a name you will never forget or that intrigues you enough to try our spice blends.

Where did you originally come up with the idea to start a spice blend company?

As our story goes, we never set out to start a spice company, we just didn’t want to waste food. We were gifted a large crop of habanero peppers, and we’re talking 15lbs+ of one of the hottest peppers out there. You can’t use all those peppers at once, so we blanched them in balsamic vinegar, canned them in mason jars, and stored them in our Philadelphia Row Home apartment refrigerator. They sat there for months.

Until one sunny and bright day, Ted pulled a few marinated peppers from the jar and started drying them on our window sill, along with some garlic. After a few days, they were dry and resembled crushed red peppers, but with more heat, flavor, and texture. We knew we had something good and continued to develop and refine our recipe from this initial experiment. You can read more about our story here!

Are your spices gluten-free?

Yes, they are, but they are blended in a facility that contains gluten allergens.

What's your hottest spice blend or product?

All our spices have about the same heat level, around 6/10. You can easily make them hotter by adding more product or less hot by adding less product. That’s the greatness of our spice blends; shake a little or shake a lot, and you control the heat level.

Do your products have a lot of sodium?

Our spice blends are low in sodium compared to many others on the market. We use all-natural ingredients. Additionally, we have specialized sodium-free products like our Salt-Free Habanero Spice.
On each of our product labels you can find our product ingredients. Click here to see all the nutritional facts!

Yes. Part of our commercial business is creating spice blends, rubs, seasonings, sauces, and packets for a variety of companies. We handle everything from R&D to label design and packaging. Our streamlined approach goes from initial consult to sample tasting, modifications, and then the final product.

We can accommodate minimums as low as 1,200 units for sauces and spices, as well as spice packet minimums of 80K units (ranging from .75oz to 10oz pouches). Email us at info@saintluciferspice.com to learn more about this part of our business. We’re proud to be spice distributors for many restaurants and other food industry companies nationwide.

What happens if I don't use my spices for a long time and they begin to clump?

We recommend storing bottles of our spices in the refrigerator after opening, especially if you do not intend to use them regularly. If they do clump, don’t worry, the blend can be easily broken up by inserting a knife into the bottle. You can also remove the blend, place it in a plastic bag, break it up with your hands, and then place it back into the bottle. Unlike many other spice blends, we do not use a lot of anti-clumping ingredients, so occasional clumping can occur when they’re not used regularly.

Do spices go bad?

Spices do not truly go bad, but they can lose some of their flavor over time. We recommend using our spice blends within 1 to 2 years to enjoy their full, robust flavor.

What's the shelf life for your spice blends, oils, and vinegars?

  • Spices: 2 years. Store them in a cool, dry location (like a refrigerator).
  • Olive Oils: 1 year. Keep them in a dry place out of direct light (like a cabinet or pantry).
  • Balsamic Vinegar: 2+ years. Also keep it in a dry place out of direct light (like a cabinet or pantry).
  • Sauce: 1 year. We recommend refrigerating after opening.

Can you bring spices on the airplane? Are they TSA-approved?

Yes, you can; and we do it regularly. They are safe to travel with. The Bloody Perfect packet is a must for Mile High Bloody Marys! Mix with your airline supplied bloody Mary cocktail.

Is there sugar in any of your spices?

No. We do not use sugar in any of our spice blends. However, we do have a small amount of sugar in our Lucy 76 Sauce.

Where in Italy are your oils and vinegars produced?

Our Balsamic Vinegar is produced exclusively for us in Modena, Italy, the world capital of balsamic vinegars in the northern part of the country.
Our Extra Virgin Olive Oils are produced exclusively for us in Latina, Italy, right outside of Rome.
